Основателем и первым художественным руководителем был Г. Мерола [Merola, Gaetano] (1923-53). С 1988 оперой руководит Л. Мансури [Mansouri, Lotfi]. Здесь дебютировали многие звезды американской оперы. Относительно короткий сезон продолжается с сентября до середины декабря. С 1932 располагается в специально выстроенном здании Оперного театра [Opera House, War Memorial Opera House] - первом муниципальном оперном театре. Здесь же выступает Сан-Францисский балет [San Francisco Ballet].
